I whine and complain as well as the next person.
No need to confirm with my friends and family.
In the grand scheme of how we use technology, once we own a computer, we are forever tied to and at the mercy of the folks who make them.
My 2006 MacPro desktop is being left behind by Apple even though it is fully functional.
I understand they have to make the cut somewhere whenever they create a new operating system but my beef is the way I had to find out.
My Dilemma
I was a MobileMe user even though it wasn’t touted as a success story for Apple.
Using iDisk, I used my Public folder as a means for my students to submit their work online.
When MobileMe was canned by Apple, I dragged my feet on upgrading my MacPro from Snow Leopard (10.6.8) to Lion (10.7) because it was my production machine.
When Mountain Lion (10.8) was released on Wednesday, Apple removed Lion from its Apps Store completely.
Mountain Lion will not run on my 2006 MacPro, so I have no way to use that machine with iCloud.
For a while there I had hopes I could buy a thumb drive with the Lion from Apple.
Unless the fellow on the phone I spoke from Apple is misinformed, it looks like I won’t be able to upgrade to 10.7 and have access to iCloud.
iCloud
Do I need iCloud? Can I live without it? Is it that big a deal?
No. It was convenient when I could synchronize the commonly used data between my computers, that’s all.
I can still drag and drop files from my MacBook Pro to the MacPro when I want to sync them. I just have to do it manually or just remember to start a project on one computer and end on it.
Mountain Lion
With Mountain Lion installed on my 17″ MacBook Pro 4,1 , do I notice any changes?
Everything seems peppier but that shouldn’t surprise me.
Since I’m spend the majority of my time with Safari, Lightroom and Photoshop these days, it’s too early to tell what works and what’s broken.
Needless to say, before I upgraded, I cloned the hard drive just in case the apps I really need don’t play with with the new cat.
So far, Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop works and yes, I can print wirelessly to both my printers the Brother HL-2170W and the Epson Workforce 845.
As long as I remember to keep things simple and I don’t run out and get an iPhone or an iPad, I can live without iCloud.
Even if I did, I just have to remember to use the MacPro for photography intensive work.
At least I have alternatives. I have access to a darkroom, film and film cameras.
Slowing down and thinking about my pictures isn’t a necessarily a bad thing.

@Chris, so how do you like the newest cat, so far? I don’t spend a lot of time in the operating system, so I can’t really tell if there’s something I like or dislike yet.
As I said, when I upgraded, first thing I did was “Command” + P and kept my fingers crossed. Thank you for the hyperlink for instructions to reset the printer.
thanks, man. i was actually able to resolve it quite easily. just had to reset the printer:
STEP II: Perform a factory reset on the printer network card
1. Turn OFF the power switch on the right side of the printer.
2. Hold down the GO button as you turn on the power switch.
The GO button is located on the top left side of the printer
below the Toner, Drum, and Error LEDs.
3. Keep the GO button pressed down until the Toner, Drum,
and Error LEDs light up. Release the GO button. Make sure
that all the LEDs turn off.
4. Press the GO button 7 times with 5 seconds. The network
card is now reset.

Thanks for visiting my blog. I was fortunate I didn’t have a problem. If I did, I guess I would have to set up the printer once again.
As I recall the documentation that came with the printer made set up quite simple. But I don’t want to jinx myself here.
I’m sure if I mess with my Airport Extreme Base Station like changing any of the settings, I’ll have problems. Post back if you still can’t fix your problem.
hi! i just “upgraded” to mountain lion and lost wifi connection to my Brother HL-2170W [same printer as yours]. i did a software update and checked whether the printer was supported. update is fine; printer is supported. any ideas on how to regain wireless functionality? thanks!
