Over the years I’ve spent a lot of time taking my students on field trips around the city but nowhere do I feel most at home than at my friend Darren Conkerite’s coffee house, Back to the Grind.
He’s been very generous to me.
Whether I’m asking to:
- have the use of a wall to showcase my work or my students’ work
- use a large table for an informal photography lesson or
- use the basement or loft for a location for a quick photoshoot. Darren has never said no to me.
Because of his generosity, I’ve met and photographed several interesting and creative people over the years.
Professional belly dancer Hadia Habibi, Johnnie Dominguez and David Schulz are just 3 examples I can think of.
Darren’s coffee house made possible many of these chance meetings which later turned into very productive collaborations.
I’m certain I am not a lone as other artistic and creative types who frequent the Grind will have similar stories.
Now Darren needs your help.
If you’ve been a reader of this blog, you will know I don’t often ask except for the occasional comment or feedback.
To make a long story short, Darren and several small businesses in the city were named in American Disability Act lawsuit.
Don’t delay.
It’s too easy to procrastinate and say I’ll do this later.
Act now.
Any amount you can donate will help Darren so go to his Go Fund Me page and show him some love and support.

You should see a virtual reality movie of the interior of Back to the Grind above.Mouse over and drag to the left or right to pan around. Hold down “Shift” to zoom in and “Control” to zoom out.
If you are unable to do so, it’s because you are trying to access it through an iOS device. For some reason, Apple’s Safari browser isn’t supporting this movie file format.
