Tiki Beach Festival 2011

Chest slapping, loud growls and very engaging drum rhythms transfixed the audience at this year's Tiki Beach festival.

Over the weekend, I visited the annual Tiki Beach Festival at Alfredo’s Beach Club in Long Beach.

Polynesian dance is known for its very expressive use of graceful hand movements.

It’s a very low-key festival, free to attend and at a pleasant location.

There wasn’t any huge crowds which is how I like it.

Anytime there are large numbers like in the thousands here in Southern California, parking is a nightmare and prices tend to be high.

I didn’t get to stay for very long unfortunately.

There were different food vendors, lots of desserts like shaved ice, smoothies and special doughnuts even.

But it wasn’t enough to keep my family occupied so I felt at odds seeing them wait while I worked to capture these images.

You would think they wouldn’t mind escaping the heat of the inland valleys for a few hours but such is the life of a photographer.

We stayed at the festival long enough to watch Tago Le Pasefika or “Touch of the Pacific” take the stage.

If I had my way, we would have stayed till after the fire dancers.

Maybe next year.

  1. Hi Debbie,
I think I know who you mean but he didn’t give me his name or introduce himself. I handed him my business card. Hopefully he contacts me and I can forward that to you since I have your contact info.

  2. HELLO ,
THERE WAS A PHOTOGRAPHER THERE TAKING PICTURES DURING THE PERFORMANCES. MY GIRL WAS ONE OF THE PERFORMERS FOR HULA HALAU O LILINOE . WOULD YOU HAPPEN TO KNOW WHO HE IS?
    THANKS
    DEBBIE

  3. DeeAnn,
Thanks but I can take no credit for the lighting. It was the dreaded very directional light at the end of the day 😉 . Kind of fun to just go and watch the dancing and to listen.

  4. What great lighting Peter.
Some look posed, some look during an event. Is it mixture of both?

I too hate shooting around crowds. And family fidgeting to leave.
