Pictures of Strangers Part 2

My buddy OS Low holds my Godoz TT600 which is inside a Lumiquest softbox powered by 4AA batteries.

A big part of the fun in taking portraits on location  is finding a location that you recognize as promising and full of possibilities.

This time while I was still in Penang, OS Low, Johnny Lee and I took a drive to a sleepy neighborhood by the sea called  Damar Permatang Laut in the southern tip of Penang Island where the runway for Penang International Airport ends.

Rohaya Roy and her husband by their motorcycle. On the right is my buddy OS Low holding my Godox speed light which has a 1/4 color temp orange gel inside a Lumiquest Softbox

As the ‘director’ of course you could work one or two ways:

  1. Have a concept or idea of how your subject will be dressed then find a location to match it.
  2. Find a location then hope you stumble across someone who is willing to be your subject making the most of what you ‘find’.

Since I was on vacation without much gear, I had to work with the 2nd approach. Find a scenic spot and hope for the best as far as finding a suitable subject.

As I watched the sun start to set around 6:05pm, I was a little anxious since there wasn’t anyone about. Then Rohaya Roy and her husband rode up on their motorcycle.

I am fortunate to have a fairly good recollection of Bahasa to be able to convince them of what I’d like to do.

At first her husband wasn’t too keen on the idea. I decided to speak and chat with Rohaya more. I think once he say I was putting more attention to his wife, he decided he better get on board.

Rohaya Roy was kind enough to trust me to make her look her best. 1/60 f4 ISO 100 24mm. Speedlight with 1/4 color temperature orange gel  probably set at 1/4 power

Compare the finished edited picture to the one I got straight out of the camera.

When I saw this on the LCD monitor of my Canon EOS R I knew I had a very nice image to begin with especially since I was shooting camera raw
Nayli looking pensive against an awesome sunset by the seashore.

  1. Guna,
Thank you for taking the time to comment. Blogs are so ‘old-fashioned’ Everyone is just flipping on their phones and speaking their unfiltered minds these days. lol

God willing I will have a few more good pictures left in me before I lose my eyesight. Looking to catching up with you over some Musang King

  2. Thank you for describing the process so articulately. Makes it easier for a non-pro like me to appreciate the painstaking work and the creativity.
    Really cool Pete!
