Improvising when you don’t have a light stand for your portraits

I’m usually downtown walking around with my cameras during the 1st Thursday of every month when the downtown galleries host the monthly Art Walk.

I love seeing the energy the younger folks bring each month.

I don’t always step in to see the artwork.

I’m there to people watch.

And it’s a good opportunity for me to find interesting faces.

Spinning, motion sickness and acting talent

Before I quit my very repetitious ride back and forth along the bike path I asked, “Have you guys had enough?”

I wanted to be sure they felt they had some good images of panning, before we headed to the playground area.

Water balloons, high shutter speeds and timing

I was looking at the shutterspeed dial the other day and it occurred to me the most under used shutterspeed was 1/4000 sec or even 1/8000 sec.

Few of beginners and even professionals ever intentionally set those shutter speeds.

So while I have a class at La Sierra University I’m teaching the basics to, I came up with this idea to illustrate equivalent exposure at the same time make it fun and more exciting for my beginners. Continue reading Water balloons, high shutter speeds and timing
