A common term often heard in photography is depth-of-field.

This refers to the zone of sharpness in a picture and it is controlled by the aperture or opening on the camera’s lens.

For this assignment, you will be taking 2 pictures of the same scene but with different apertures. See the examples below.

Equipment

  • Camera
  • Tripod
  • Some objects like rocks, water bottles which you can arrange on a table
  1. After you arrange your objects on the table or an appropriate bench, attach your camera to the tripod.
  2. Frame your objects by looking in the viewfinder so that they appear as large as possible and zoom in to the 55mm setting on the lens.
  3. Turn the mode dial and set the camera to “M” Manual exposure mode.
  4. Turn off the auto-focus on your camera by moving the switch on the lens from AF to MF (Manual Focus)

Look for this switch on the camera lens. Move the switch to “M” to switch it to Manual focus. Return this to the “A” position for autofocus after you shoot this assignment.
  5. Set your ISO to 200
  6. Set your aperture to f5.6 (for the 1st picture)

To change the aperture on your camera, you have to hold down the button with the +/- button while turning the Command dial with your right thumb
  7. Push the shutter button halfway to activate the camera’s meter. Move the command dial with your right thumb to change the shutter speed until you see the meter is centered or the indicator is at zero.
The camera meter shows if a picture is taken with the current exposure settings, the picture will be too bright (overexposed)
The camera meter shows if a picture is taken with the current exposure settings, the picture will be too dark (underexposed)

When the camera meter shows it is at zero, then exposure is correct
  8. As with your other assignments, rename the 2 files you get out of your camera before submitting to Google Classroom under this assignment. Use your ‘first name_last name initial_DOF1. jpg’ &  ‘first name_last name initial_DOF2. jpg’  e.g. PeterP_DOF1.jpg
