So many unknowns in Distance Learning

Now that we are into school for about a month, there are still so many unknowns.

Most teachers here at El Modena, are using Google Meet because  Orange Unified School districts’ use of Google Education Suite.

The challenge for me and most photography teachers is how do we make everything as seamless as possible?

Google Classroom works okay but what it lacks is the ability to organize material well. That is why I have chosen to use this website.

Screenshot of my class ZOOM meetingOn the first week of class I asked all students to answer a questionnaire about what technology they are using for distance learning.

My students are using the following:

  • district issued Chromebooks
  • personal Windows computers without Photoshop
  • personal Mac computers without Photoshop
  • iPhones
  • Android phones
  • personal Win computers with Photoshop
  • personal Mac computers with Photoshop

So that necessitated a workflow for everyone depending on their circumstances.

With all this dependence on Google Meet, Zoom and Google suite, not a day goes by when a student will tell me that they are having trouble.

Some will tell me they are losing connection to the Google Meet or Zoom meeting because their home internet connection is too slow or because their siblings and parents are also working at the same time.

So with so many variables, I have found I had to record a different version of the same tutorial using the tools my students have access to.

Using Photopea website for those with Chromebooks or older computers which are unable to install Photoshop

Using Photoshop for those students who have access to a Mac or Win computer which can install Photoshop.
