Spammed Big Time

pink_flowers_s

Yesterday evening I found these flowers which always capture my attention at this time of the year. I had a feeling I would be by the park, so I grabbed my camera. Canon 40D 17-35mm ISO 100 1/15 sec @ f22
I always feel my post is incomplete if I can’t include a picture even if it’s unrelated. I must be insecure about my writing. I’m including a vertical as well. Let me know which you like better.

While I was “napping” my guestbook which is so yesterday was spammed big time.

There’s so much that my only recourse is to remove it entirely.

Spam is a problem for anyone who has a website where you allow some sort of interaction between your visitors and you.

When I implemented the guestbook, I didn’t give it enough thought.

Wiis and WiFi

Summer in the Phun household means I don’t have my WiFi network to myself.

There must be some truism to this condition: as big a house you think you have when you first move in, you will eventually fill all the rooms and your stuff will overflow and fill even your garage.

In this situation, my DSL bandwidth of 6MBs which is more than adequate is appearing anemic.

I could switch to FiOS or Fiber Optic service and pay through the nose.

I made the mistake of mentioning the 16MBs service of FiOs.

My son immediately jumped in suggesting that would take care of the bandwidth problem.

It doesn’t help that I’m on my MacBook Pro and so are the other 2 Wiis! Why 2 Wiis? My son has 3 friends over to play their video games.

Apparently the boys don’t want a split screen to play their Mario Superkart game. So one of his buddies brought over his own game console.

Good thing I’m not trying to watch any online video right now. It’ll bring the entire (local area network) LAN to a crawl.

Wait till my wife gets online with my G4 powerbook and tries to surf the net. Someone’s going home!

What’s In a Name?

It turns out there’s a lot more than you can imagine.

I wasn’t aware the original “Pixel Pete” lives in Minnesota. He contacted me and asked that I go by another moniker.

My sincerest apologies for any inconvenience Peter “Pixel Pete” Martin. So this should be a lesson to all who read this.

If you are going to have some sort of branded name, you’ll need make sure it’s registered.

More importantly if you attempt to do so, you’ll learn if the name’s been taken.

So, may I have the name when you’re done with it, Pete? I’m only kidding. You’re going to outlive me I’m sure.

This should turn out to be an interesting experiment.

Let’s see how long it takes for the search engine bots to sort this out.

I’m actually curious to see what links are going to broken and how soon they’ll be fixed.

When I chose it, I had not intended to be taken seriously. I thought of it as a handle like the usernames people use when they sign up for websites.

If there was a warning that the name is spoken for, then I would have added something really exciting like the year I was born or worse my social security number.

To be sure there are other issues I’ll have to address like my Twitter username.

If I change that username, I’ll probably lose all my followers. Good thing, it’s not hard currency.

Since I don’t have an attachment to the name and Mr. Martin who asked so nicely has 1st dips, will 100 lashes suffice?

Let me know if “The Pixels in Pete’s World” does anything for you.

Do You Hate Registering at Websites?

If you read online news, I’m sure you know most websites want you to register to access their content. If you don’t feel like giving them your e-mail address, here’s one website you can try.

Bug Me Not is a site where users share their made up usernames and passwords so you won’t need to.

Most of these news websites will store a cookie on your computer so that once you log in, you won’t have to again. If you clear the cache of your browser, you’ll have to head back to Bug Me Not to get another username and password.
