Meet photographer Tony Blei Part 2

4. Did you have to work a lot of weekends, evenings and did you have to miss some very important milestones in your family life?
When my son was two, he developed a tumor that was severe enough that we had to take him from our home in Nevada to UCLA Medical Center where he was operated on and fully recovered.

During recovery, my wife needed a lot of help. My photo editor felt that the best thing for my family was to put me on nights and weekends. When you’re the new guy, you get nights and weekends.

The great thing about nights and weekends is that is where you can shine. It’s all you!

You are a visual problem solver and you are making news content decisions regarding the next day’s paper. Many industries have night and weekend shifts.

Learn to suck it up and pay your dues.

Meet photographer Tony Blei Part 1

Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin

Another photographer I’m privileged to have met online is Tony Blei.

I first came across Tony Blei, reading about “singles bar lessons” on the Rising Blackstar blog.

I admire Tony for his creativity, sense of humor, sharp wit and wonderful humility.

Tony makes Phoenix, Arizona his home.

I hope it will be apparent why I chose to ask Tony the following questions:

1.How important is a formal education in photography?
I am absolutely 100% self taught. I did go to a trade school, but it was more of a diploma mill (and they’ve gone out of business). I’m left with a meaningless “diploma.”

However! Schools provide insight and ways to go further, faster. As you’ve pointed out, PJ School taught you things like law and ethics.

I’m grateful that I had a pretty good moral compass that allowed me to avoid the obstacles that citizen journos will trip over (lawsuits).

While I’ve been competitive, the one thing I noticed about my college-grad counterparts is their network of contacts.

This can be very important, especially if you are working freelance and need a helping hand — or someone to vouch for you.

My advice: Go to school. The School of Hard Knocks is just that, hard. When you graduate from a university, you will enjoy the benefit of credibility.

Riverside’s Family Village Festival 2011

The dramatic 10 am sunlight placed the stage into shade and that allowed me to isolate the wonderful face of a Japanese dancer against a backdrop of parasols.

Our sun which makes colors bright also creates situations that make it not less than ideal for photography.

Most events happen at midday when the sun is brightest.

Since pros work when the clients say so, they have to overcome these problems.

When shooting in bright sunlight, at midday, there can be such a thing as too much depth-of-field. Â Using a neutral density filter and panning may be the only way to 'clean up your backgrounds'. 1/20 sec f20 ISO 100 with a 80mm lens.

Simple beauty dish Part 1

Do-it-yourself projects for photographers abound on the internet.

Many are not worth the time, expense and effort.

Occasionally I come across one that is intriguing, easy and cheap that I can’t resist trying it myself.

A search for the keywords ‘beauty dish‘ will turn up a slew of tutorials and even videos on how to make one.

They range in complexity, design and build.

The toughest ones made of metal resemble ones sold commercially.

The low budget one, the one I am attempting, is made of:

  • a salad dish made of recyclable plastic (Smart & Final $5)
  • rain gutter hardware pieces ($4 from Home Depot)
  • CD/DVD cake cover (salvaged from my office)

Other items needed:

  • Superglue
  • 7 pieces of small nut and bolts
  • White Spray paint
  • Black Spray paint (optional to make it look nice)
  • Xacto knife
  • Dremel tool or a sharp ice pick to punch holes in the plastic surfaces

Expect to do a lot of testing before you come up with a winning design that works to your liking.
