Life after photojournalism & a yacht wedding

gary_vianey1Tomorrow will be 5 years to the day I gave my 2-week notice to my former employer, the newspaper.

Last November they offered a buyout to all its employees.

Some took the offer, others thought they’re bullet-proof, indispensable and safe.

I figured out had I stayed on I would have been eligible to $50K minus Uncle Sam’s cut.

I kicked myself, of course, for not staying on.

Actually it wasn’t that hard a kick I gave myself.

In the time I left, I easily made that much.

The silver lining in this is: I learned never to be complacent again especially not in today’s job market.

Wedding Photography–Professionals vs Part-timers

Spend enough time  online and I’m sure you’ll notice the number of wedding and portrait photographers has increased exponentially because of the affordability of digital SLRs, the relatively-easy learning curve of photoshop and ease of setting up a website.

What this has done is enable some photography enthusiasts or hobbyists to make a some extra income shooting weddings on their weekends.

A different way to see a Night Scenic

If something appears in the visible spectrum, your camera’s sensor should be able to record it.

Even if  you can’t see it, if in view of the lens, it will show up. 

This is assuming you leave the shutter open long enough.

Photographing Lunch

A couple of posts back I mentioned a still life assignment I gave my beginning photography students.

Some might say this is way too tough one for folks who are starting out.

That’s true, but I think in attempting this, they will learn quite a bit.
