Etiquette in the Internet Age

 

I couldn’t find a picture related to this post. So whenever I can’t find a picture that goes with a particular post, I thought I might share a favorite picture just for the heck of it. I must be the only person who didn’t see the President Obama’s Inauguration “live.”  At least that’s how I feel. I’m sure you’ve seen the footage on tv and the pictures online. See what my friend, photographer Geoff Baker, saw through his lens.

I was teaching from 8 am to 12:30 pm Tuesday. I did feel it was rude that one of my students in class was watching it during my lecture.

I sort of let it slide because I was substituting. As historic as it was, I was rather disappointed that she clearly disregarded classroom decorum. Continue reading Etiquette in the Internet Age

Netflix Roku Player–streaming movie rentals

Netflix’s Roku Player

I tried Netflix way back in its infancy but I stopped subscribing over 2 years ago.

In its infancy while the number of subscribers were low, it was great.

Then they got BIG.

As with most things the law of supply and demand meant you had to wait long periods if the movie you wanted was in high demand.

I never felt like I was in that much of a hurry to watch a movie  but the only thing that irked me was when you got a DVD disc that wasn’t playable.

You would have to return the broken DVD, lose a couple of days before they ship you a replacement. Continue reading Netflix Roku Player–streaming movie rentals

Your online presence

Like many freelance artists, I explored the various options or paths to creating an online presence or a website.

The trouble with research online is that you have to be able to sort out the good information from the bad.

Since I didn’t feel like leaving my fate in the hands of strangers, I learned by trial and error.

Try answering these questions:

  • do you want to just concentrate on content creation?
  • how hands-on or computer savvy are you?
  • do you have a budget to hire someone?

Having gone down this path myself, I thought I should share my own experiences. Learning any new skill in today’s job market is always a good thing.

Whether that skill is HTML, Cascading Style Sheets or just basic web design, advancements and the introduction of applications like Apple’s iWeb has de-mystified website creation. Continue reading Your online presence
