Pretender or real, thanks to technology, we’re all photographers

The explosion of digital cameras on to every imaginable handheld device has empowered the masses but debate continues as to who is the pretender & who is the real photographer.

A lot has been said about fauxtographers

In fact whole websites have been devoted to putting down want-to-be photographers.

Momarazzis, a play on the word paparazzi, is another term that has been used a lot too.

A post I wrote asking pros and amateurs photographers to call for a truce on Rising Black Star a while back showed me this labeling and making denigrating remarks about other photographers is an exercise in frivolity.

In the film days, having darkroom experience might have been a criteria to separate the want-to-be from the ones who are not as serious about their photography.

That is not to say that all hobbyists shooting film back then don’t know how to work in darkrooms.

I exposed miles and miles of transparency film before I went to school to formally learn how to develop film, work in the darkroom and learn how to use lighting in photography.

Mind you, the formal degree in photography doesn’t even make you a photographer.

Remember, everyone has to start somewhere. Continue reading Pretender or real, thanks to technology, we’re all photographers

Barely enough contrast for a silhouette

Nice job by Jose Sandoval capturing this image. I have to say, I'm pretty good as the 'talent' in this image. Of course, the Dalmatian puppy helped

It’s been one of my favorite field trip with students but the success of it depends a lot of the kind of weather we get.

Not a whole lot can be done when the day is overcast.

When there is insufficient contrast, silhouettes are tough.

I counted "1, 2...3" They jumped on '3'. Jann Smallwood captured this image.

Mac user alert Spring 2012

As expected, Mac users are being targeted more and more as Windows users make the switch.

It’s no longer safe to operate as before.

There’s been a rash of trojans and malware aimed at Mac users.

To see if your favorite machine has been affected, download and run these 2 scripts.

After you double click the zipped file and the accompanying scripts, if you see the dialog box below, it means you are okay.

This is a good thing if you see this dialog box. It means all is good on your Mac. But don't be lulled into a false sense of security. Make sure to check for software updates periodically, especially if you don't shut down your Mac.

But be sure to do a software update check periodically especially if you’re like me and sometimes don’t shut down your Macs.

Grab their latest security update Java For Mac OS X  10.6 Update 8

The default condition is your Mac usually checks for updates automatically.

My print displayed in Michael's home

It’s not very often I get mail.

I get a lot of comments which are SPAM, so when Michael Hayes wrote, it made my day.

Michael had predicted correctly which picture was my favorite when I had a one-man show at Back to the Grind coffeehouse.

Time sure has flown.

I actually got to meet Michael in person when he came out to Riverside to help his son get to college.

Michael sent along a picture to show me where the picture he won is displayed.
What a nice job he did by picking the matte board colors.

Thanks Michael for taking the time to share your picture.

Here's the picture. Originally shot on Fujichrome 100 circa 1990
