As you progress in your technical abilities, you will find you might like having a 2nd flash.

When you use a low shutter speed, you are actually using 3 lights sources: the 2 flash units and the ambient or available light. If you are working at night, you  have 2.

A typical on-location setup. When the Santa Ana Winds are not howling here in Southern California,  the umbrella on a lightstand is a quick way to get some soft light.  The rest of the time I have to carry a sandbag just in case. My White Lightning flash is powered by a portable battery on the bottom right of the picture. The flash is triggered by a radio slave so there’s one less wire to trip over.

Exactly how much photo equipment do you need?

My Blurry Basketball Pictures

When the light levels are so horrendous that photographers describe those arenas as “dark as dungeons,” you may not have a choice but to “pan” with the action. ISO 1600 1/60 sec @ f5.6 80-200 zoom at 200 mm.

A few posts back, I mentioned blurry basketball pictures. As I think about it now, sometimes even with the most expensive equipment, all you can do is get by.
