Mum puts some finishing touches to Cleopatria's costume before the judging begins

Here are this year’s contestants in the annual Halloween costume contest held at Riverside Plaza, a stone’s throw from where I live.

The kids 12 and under were decked out with their parents and grandparents cheering them on.

Festa Italiana 2010

The image quality from my Canon 5D Mark 2 tells me I shouldn't have waited this long to upgrade. I love the video and stills.

Despite cooler than normal temperatures this year, Festa Italiana crowds didn’t let temperatures in the mid-60s deter them from having a grand time.

This year’s performers, Gina Iaccovino, Romina Arena, the Riverside Opera and Pietro, kept everyone thoroughly entertained with favorites like Theme from Godfather, New York, New York and other Italian classics.

Poly High Track team car wash fundraiser

Reflections are always interesting especially when you have very saturated colors: wet black asphalt, soap suds and shiny metallic blue

So far I’ve been very pleased with my Canon Powershot G11.

I’ve shot a wedding on board a riverboat in Sacramento with it.

I use it to shoot video clips of my 4 cats.

Whenever I need a quick picture for a post, since I’ve equipped it  with an Eye-Fi memory card, I grab a shot it is downloaded to my MacBook Pro by the time I sit down and get to work.

Over the weekend at a car wash fundraiser for my son’s school Poly High track team,  I put it through its paces.

Looking out from under a shade can provide a reference--another compositional cliché

All these were taken at ISO 80, exposure set on Manual and Auto White Balance.

Saturation of color is a good device as well to draw attention to a subject but it means under-exposing intentionally
While waiting in the car, I might as well use the camera
Faces always draw us into pictures. Doesn't matter if we know the people or not. We love to see faces

Tips on event photography Part 2

Lunchtime entertainment–UC Davis students danced during the talent show  at the recent UC African American Black Coalition Conference on the campus of UC RIverside.

I mentioned in my previous post on event photography, the more important the event, the more likely there will be a printed program.

This program is extremely useful because you can use it to plan your coverage.

Since I work alone, this program can help me decide where to be and with what lens I’m going to shoot the scene before me.

A very tight picture of the program can serve as a very effective  title slide or opening when I author a slideshow. Continue reading Tips on event photography Part 2
