Carlo & Mary’s 50th wedding anniversary

carlo_mary6

Cutting the rug–Carlo and Mary dance during their 50th wedding anniversary at Cafe Sevilla restaurant.

Mary and Carlo were one of my earliest clients when I started working for myself.

Their daughter Teresa was the one who hired me to document this very important milestone.

Event photography of this nature is always fun. There is no stress at all,  unlike a wedding.

Everyone is in great spirits and out to have a great time.

I consider it a privilege to be included in something like this because I’m in awe of couples who are married for longer than I’ve been alive.

It’s 110°F Out, But It’s a Dry Heat

Cooling off–Here’s a typical feature picture you might see in a newspaper especially when it’s the first day of summer when it’s over 100°F. I found this woman lying down in the shade waiting for her bus. Ask for permission first, or take the picture first? There are no hard and fast rules. If possible, I always take the picture first simply because the moment will be gone if you don’t. Spontaneous moments are ruined if you ask first. When discovered, come clean. It always works out better instead of trying to sneak away without any explanation. You’ll risk having the cops called on you especially if there are kids involved.

It’s those hot summer days like today that I don’t miss being at the newspaper.

I used to drive aimlessly looking for  feature pictures.

Add today’s price of gasoline, multiply by the number of photographers on staff and you’ll get the idea of the cost of a picture that may never get published.

Jina Jani and Maria Gutierez make some last minute adjustments on their wall. Thanks to Ana Heranadez, Yesenia Barnett, Audree Garaza, Carrie Massie, Jina Jani, Maria Gutierez, Mary Stover and Windsor Muguertegui for participating.

The last time around I vowed not to subject myself to the aggravation of putting up my student’s pictures on the wall of my favorite coffeehouse in Riverside.

Glad to say I got over it. I had a very motivated group of students who put up with me for the semester, so the 3 hours or so I spent with Jina Wednesday morning putting the work up was well worth it.

It’s a fine effort for many of them who have never made enlargements of their work beyond a 8 x 10 print. Continue reading My Students’ Show

An Engagement Portrait with Katie & Ryan in Riverside

katie_ryan1

Ryan and Katie at the end of our 2-hour photo session appears to have forgotten about us lurking in the background.

Katie and Ryan drove an hour and half from San Diego over the weekend to meet with me.

Brave souls they are to trust a complete stranger whom they’ve never met to do an engagement portrait.

I just spoke to Katie over the phone. One of my former students Jayme who’s doing extremely well in her photography business, was the intermediary.
