Swine

piggies

If I were a pig, I’d be very bummed.

Lately I’ve been given a bad rep.

For one thing, folks think nothing about yelling “Swine” and using it as a curse word.

Didn’t anyone like the movie “Babe?”

I found this picture in my archives recently as I was looking for inspiration.

These newborns were under a heat lamp, enjoying the warmth of each other and the soft straw.

I don’t need to mimic the very nasal grunts I heard, do I?

As much as I like my picture, I have to share this other one with you all. Continue reading Swine

Choosing which lens to use

dancerss

These Aztec dancers were photographed with a 180mm lens at f2.8 on a film camera. The equivalent focal length on a digital SLR without a full frame sensor would be 180 divided by 1.6 = 112 mm . What you see is the full frame. If needed, the picture could have been cropped to exclude their feet. So a telephoto of about 100 mm, if you can step back far enough, is a good choice for group shots of 5 people.

How do you choose which lens to use?

If lighting is not an issue, the answer to that question depends on your subject.

Since I do mostly portraits, the 50 mm f1.4 is on my camera most.

I start there but will switch lenses to the 100 mm 2.8 macro and even the 80-200 f2.8 zoom. Since I light most of my portraits, I can get away with hand-holding that old lens which doesn’t have image stabilization. Continue reading Choosing which lens to use

And that isn’t an unreasonable assumption.

The instant feedback with digital photography gives this impression that it is easy.

There may be more to it than just having a good eye.

Summer Vacation Photos

When on vacation, it’s nice not to have to lug around a digital SLR everywhere. Point & shoot cameras have come a long way. This picture taken with the Canon Powershot G3 is more than adequate for documenting vacations and other familiy events. ISO 50 1/200 sec @ f7. Though they have limitations, if you understand their capabilities, you can still get some very nice pictures. I made this by laying on the ground so that my kids appear like they’re rock climbing.

If you’re reading this, you’re like me, you have gigabytes of personal pictures scattered over many volumes of hard drives.

Some of these pictures are so out-of-focus and so poorly exposed yet I can’t bring myself to erase them. Why is that?
